The Rooftop (2010)

Bond sprints across a city skyline, gun in hand, with no ground to fall to.

The Rooftop (2010)

The Rooftop is a campaign level in GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, the 2010 Wii remaster of the classic 1997 N64 title GoldenEye 007. Developed by Raven Software and published by Activision, the level places James Bond on the upper floors of a dense urban environment, where he must traverse between buildings, engage hostile forces, and complete shooting challenges to advance the mission. As one of the earlier stages in the campaign, The Rooftop establishes the game's signature blend of third-person traversal, precision marksmanship, and light platforming. The Reloaded version retains the core layout and objectives of the original while presenting the level with updated visuals and refined controls suited to the Wii platform.

Lore & Background

In the GoldenEye 007 campaign, Bond's mission takes him above the streets and onto the exposed rooftops of a tightly packed city. The architecture is a maze of ledges, stairwells, and narrow walkways connecting one structure to the next, and the wind and open sky make every gap between buildings a real hazard. The level is designed so that Bond is perpetually exposed—there is little cover, and enemies can be spotted from multiple angles at once. The Rooftop stage reinforces the series' central fantasy: Bond is not merely a shooter but a mover through hostile space. He vaults over railings, drops from one parapet to another, and uses the verticality of the city to reposition between engagements. Interludes of fixed-target shooting galleries break up the traversal, testing the player's aim in the same way the original 1997 game did. In the Reloaded presentation, the level benefits from a refreshed visual style—cleaner building models, more readable enemy silhouettes against the sky, and a slightly reworked camera that makes long-range shots across gaps more forgiving. The underlying structure, however, remains faithful to the N64 original, preserving the rhythm of run, aim, shoot, and leap that defined the franchise.

In Their Own Story

The city hums below, a grid of headlights and distant traffic. Bond crouches on the edge of a concrete parapet, the wind tugging at his coat. Across the gap—maybe fifteen metres of open air—another building waits, its rooftop lit by a single sodium lamp. Somewhere up there, a target is moving. He checks his pistol, feels the familiar weight, and steps off the ledge. The drop is short, the landing hard. He rolls, comes up running, and is already aiming before his boots stop. The city stretches out in every direction, a board of rooftops and shadows, and he is the only piece that matters on it.

Reader's Guide

The Rooftop is one of the earlier campaign stages in GoldenEye 007: Reloaded. Bond begins on a city rooftop and must make his way across a series of connected buildings to reach the level's objective. The level alternates between free-movement traversal and structured shooting challenges. Bond runs along narrow walkways, drops between buildings, and navigates around obstacles such as vents, railings, and stairwells. Hostile enemies are positioned along the route and must be eliminated or avoided to progress. Fixed shooting-gallery sections test the player's aim with stationary targets, a staple of the GoldenEye 007 design. Completing these sections is required to unlock the path forward. The level is relatively short and serves as an early introduction to the game's core loop: move through a hostile environment, engage enemies, complete aim-based challenges, and reach the exit. Its rooftop setting keeps the action exposed and fast-paced, with limited cover and a constant sense of vertical movement. In the Reloaded version, the level plays similarly to the 1997 original but with a more forgiving camera and updated visuals. No major structural changes were made to the layout.
