M203

One slow, heavy round that turns a corridor into a crater.

M203

The M203 is a 40 mm grenade launcher available in GoldenEye 007 (1997, Rare / Nintendo 64). Presented in-game as a standalone explosive weapon rather than an underbarrel attachment, it fires slow-travelling high-explosive rounds that deal significant area damage on impact. It occupies a niche in Bond's arsenal as the go-to tool for clearing groups, breaching obstacles, and dealing with heavily armoured targets that smaller-calibre weapons struggle against. In both the single-player campaign and the multiplayer modes, the M203 is a limited-ammo weapon, encouraging players to spend its rounds deliberately. Its slow projectile speed and wide blast radius make it a skill-based choice: accurate lead and timing matter more here than with the game's faster-firing sidearms.

Lore & Background

In the real world, the M203 is a 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher adopted by the United States military in the early 1970s to give infantry squads organic indirect-fire capability. Its modularity—mounting beneath the M16 or M4 rifle—meant a single soldier could deliver a shaped or high-explosive round without a dedicated crew-served weapon. That blend of portability and destructive punch made it a natural fit for a one-man spy's loadout. Rare's GoldenEye 007 translates that concept into a pure single-player and multiplayer weapon. Bond does not attach it to another gun; instead the M203 is its own selectable weapon, fired from the hip or over the shoulder with a distinct recoil kick and a visible muzzle flash. The projectile arcs slowly, giving the player a brief window to lead a target or aim at a cluster of enemies before the round detonates in a wide, screen-shaking blast. Because the game's missions are tightly scripted and ammo is scarce, the M203 becomes a tactical resource. Players learn to save its rounds for moments where the SMG or shotgun simply cannot punch through—turrets, groups of guards in a room, or destructible cover that opens a new line of fire. In multiplayer lobbies the M203 is a crowd-favourite for its satisfying, room-clearing explosions and the skill premium of landing a slow lob on a moving target.

In Their Own Story

The vault door was sealed, the alarm silent, and the last two guards were pressing against the far wall, rifles raised. Bond did not raise his pistol. He cycled the M203 into his hands, felt the cold polymer grip, and exhaled. The round left the barrel with a deep, guttural thud and hung in the air a half-second longer than a bullet ever would. He watched it arc, watched the guards track it with their eyes, and then the world turned white and orange. The blast peeled the door's outer panel loose and sent both men tumbling into the corridor beyond. One round. One magazine left. Bond slung the launcher back and walked through the smoke.

Reader's Guide

The M203 fires a single 40 mm high-explosive round per trigger pull. The projectile travels noticeably slower than the game's other weapons, so you must lead moving targets or aim slightly ahead of a cluster of enemies. The blast radius is generous: a direct hit will kill most standard enemies, and a near-miss still deals heavy splash damage in a wide cone. In the single-player campaign the M203 appears in select missions as a limited-ammo weapon. There is no mid-mission reload, so every round is precious. A common tactic is to use it on groups of guards in a confined room, on destructible cover that reveals a hidden path, or on heavily armoured targets that shrug off SMG and shotgun fire. If you are in a tight corridor, be mindful of splash damage to friendly NPCs or to yourself if you are too close to the blast epicentre. In multiplayer the M203 is a high-risk, high-reward pick. Its slow round makes it easy to dodge if you react, but a well-timed lob into a group of three or four opponents can end a round instantly. It pairs well with aggressive play: close the distance, pop a round into a cluster, and switch to your pistol or SMG to finish stragglers. Avoid using it in open arenas where the slow projectile gives opponents plenty of time to sidestep.
