Arctic (1997 Research Base)

Bond breaks into the ice — Trevelyan's frozen laboratory is no place for a lone agent.

Arctic (1997 Research Base)

Arctic is a mission level in GoldenEye 007, the 1997 Nintendo 64 action-adventure game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. Set in 1997 to match the timeline of the James Bond film it adapts, the level places James Bond inside a remote research base in the Arctic, where he must navigate hostile corridors, eliminate Trevelyan's operatives, and complete the mission objective before the facility's systems are lost to his enemies. As one of the early stages in the campaign, the Arctic level establishes the game's signature blend of third-person gunplay, stealth infiltration, and environmental traversal, and introduces the frozen, industrial aesthetic that contrasts with the later oceanic and urban stages.

Lore & Background

The Arctic research base sits in a desolate polar landscape, a cluster of prefabricated modules and reinforced corridors buried under snowdrifts. In the narrative of GoldenEye 007, the facility serves as one of the operational outposts through which Alec Trevelyan coordinates his campaign to seize the GoldenEye satellite. The base is staffed by armed henchmen and automated security, and its interior is a maze of laboratories, server rooms, and armoured passages lit by the cold blue glow of instrument panels. Rare designed the level as a tight, corridor-driven environment that emphasises close-quarters combat and limited cover. The exterior snow and interior industrial metal create a strong visual contrast, and the level's layout rewards players who memorise patrol routes and use the environment—shelves, consoles, and doorways—to break line of sight with enemies. Within the broader campaign, the Arctic mission is one link in a chain of objectives that take Bond from the satellite itself, through a helicopter, a submarine, a factory, a city, and a dam, before returning to the satellite for the final confrontation with Trevelyan. Each stage advances the plot by denying Trevelyan a piece of the puzzle he needs to bring GoldenEye under his control.

In Their Own Story

The wind howls across the ice shelf, tearing at the snow that has buried the perimeter fence in white drifts. Bond crouches behind a supply crate, the cold biting through his jacket, and watches two of Trevelyan's men pace the corridor beyond the shattered glass of the service entrance. Their boots crunch on frost. A console blinks amber in the dark. He checks his Walther PPK, slides the magazine home, and waits for the second guard to turn his back. One shot. The other spins, raises his rifle, and Bond is already moving—through the doorway, into the humming blue light of the lab, where the real work begins.

Reader's Guide

Bond arrives at the Arctic research base as part of his campaign to stop Alec Trevelyan from commandeering the GoldenEye satellite. The level is a confined, corridor-heavy environment: laboratories, server rooms, and armoured passages connected by narrow doorways and stairwells. The player must infiltrate the base, eliminate or avoid Trevelyan's armed operatives, and complete the mission objective—typically reaching a terminal or disabling a system—while managing limited ammunition and health. The layout is largely linear with a few branching paths, and enemies patrol set routes, making stealth and timing as viable as open combat. Completing the Arctic mission advances the story to the next stage of the campaign. The level serves as an early showcase of the game's core loop: explore, fight, and progress, and it introduces the visual language of the interior facility design that recurs in later stages.
